Beverly Threatt left this world April 5, 2022, leaving behind a legacy of love and a lifetime of beautiful memories for those who knew her. She will be greatly missed by many.
To know her was to love her. She instantly welcomed you into her light and never failed to give a compliment at the first opportunity. Anyone who crossed her path was met with a bright smile and was guaranteed to feel at home in her presence right from the start. She was warm, quick-witted, and wickedly funny.
As a mother, she was gentle, supportive, and fun. If times were hard, her children didn’t know it because she created magic for them and always made them feel secure and loved. She never questioned or criticized any ambitions, only cheered them on and did whatever she could to help. She would bend over backwards to support any endeavor, whether noble or frivolous.
Bev loved fun, she loved joy, she was a willing and enthusiastic partner in shenanigans. She was the first one to hop on a dirt bike or climb a tree in her younger days. Images of her revving up a jet ski or walking on her hands or teetering on a paddle board are peppered into many of our fond memories of her. She could talk you into stepping out of your comfort zone to experience a thrill, too. She was all about living life to the fullest.
She really enjoyed having company and her hospitality was limitless and seemingly effortless. She prided herself on her grilling skills and her potato salad and there was none finer as far as her family is concerned. She never minded if you made a mess, as long as you were having fun doing it. She found her forever home on the lake almost 30 years ago and poured her heart and soul into making it somewhere she loved to be and a place to enjoy with people she loved. One of her favorite things was lounging on the deck couch over the water with a good book and a hot cup of coffee.
Bev was an artsy, entrepreneurial sort who always had “something in the pipeline” to work on. In the 80’s she drew a coloring page with word games for the local paper, invented an impressive board game, and spent several years of her free time writing her life story down in a massive 3-ring binder, chucking it into a dumpster immediately upon finishing it. “Therapy,” she said. She could play guitar, organ, and the accordian. She was a great seamstress and knotted together many beautiful macrame creations. She was known for building crafty contraptions like her canoe roller which helped her get the canoe out of the water by herself with ease. Or, the cat door with a pull she routed to her bedside so she wouldn’t have to get up in the middle of the night when those “damn cats” would howl to come in. She was plagued by a great number of furry creatures and she loved telling them she hated them, even though we all knew it wasn’t true, no matter how many times they peed on the carpet. She fantasized about great birds of prey swooping down to pluck them from the deck and carry them off while she waved and smiled. These visions brought her much happiness.
Her long-awaited grandchildren were the light of her life and the feeling was mutual. She made them feel heard, she was their happy place. She packed as many adventures as she could into her time with them, and her pride in them was immeasurable. Oma had sweet tea, frozen grapes, and popsicles at the ready and her door was always open to them. She didn’t hesitate to indulge any of their whims. She spent hours swinging with them under the deck, telling stories and giggling.
She leaves behind Kelly Brogdon, daughter, Michael Dow, son and her three precious grandchildren, Oscar, Charlotte, and Jonah Brogdon. She is also survived by her sisters, Gloria Dechert, Cynthia Ooten,
and Angela Ray, and nieces and nephews she adored. Our lives are not quite as bright without her, though we are relieved that her long battle with cancer is over. We are comforted that she is no longer in pain, and that she is now in good company regaling her lost loved ones with funny stories of things they missed down here after they left.
Service on Sunday at Berea Friendship United Methodist Church at 2:00pm. A Celebration of Life Gathering will held on the lake at a later date, TBA.
