Beverly Ann Tuggle Elmore, 91 – a remarkable woman who reflected the best of “The Greatest Generation” – passed away on October 21, 2020, at her home in Landrum, SC with family close by.
Born in Birmingham, AL in April 1929, Beverly embraced a full, enriching life – shaped by tight bonds with family, many caring relationships, rewarding experiences, and meaningful accomplishments. She grew up during the Great Depression and witnessed America’s resilient strength in World War II; this is when Beverly developed her deeply-held values of gratitude, Christian faith, and unwavering commitment to what matters most.
She graduated from Ensley High School and went on to attend the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL. She later married Roy ‘Guy’ Elmore in September of 1950 and began an adventure that would last 53 years. Beverly was a loving wife, devoted mother to her three children, and for the past 30 years was beloved as ‘Grammy’ to her four grandchildren. Along the way, Beverly was also a caretaker and trainer of a wide variety of dogs, cats, horses, and livestock (too numerous to name here).
As the quintessential Southern Lady, Beverly’s many interests were woven together as she raised her family and served the community . . . quite simply, she could do it all. She held jobs in banking, worked at the University of Alabama, helped build and run a farm with her husband Guy, and even with retirement beckoning, operated a furniture store. Beverly did all this while simultaneously pursuing multiple passions: painting, gardening, bird watching, tennis, and pickleball, playing Bridge, reading novels, cooking, and of course, rooting for Coach Bear Bryant and the Alabama Crimson Tide on football Saturdays.
Beverly loved hosting parties for neighborhood and country club friends and was renowned for preparing the Sunday family feasts that became an Elmore tradition. She also took advantage of opportunities to travel – whether to see the changing autumn colors in New England, explore her European heritage and the historic splendor of Old England, or visit with extended family and take in the beauty of the Southeastern U.S. Beverly was dedicated to her church wherever she lived (most recently as a member of First Baptist Church – Landrum, SC), and was an active volunteer in many charitable organizations through the years. She gave graciously and generously – of her resources, her time, and herself.
Beverly was predeceased by her parents, William Pickney Tuggle, Jr. and Mary Inez (Stewart) Tuggle, her husband Roy Guy Elmore, and her brother, William P. Tuggle III [and his wife Jean]. She is survived by her children Leigh Elizabeth Borreson (Don), Laurie Tuggle Dunn (David), Kevin Guy Elmore (Joni), and her grandchildren William McKinley Dunn (Hannah), Elizabeth Ann Dunn, Kevin Guy Elmore, Jr., and Spencer Stevens Elmore.
Arrangements for a life celebration and memorial tribute are forthcoming and will be announced shortly. In lieu of flowers, donations to honor Beverly Ann Tuggle Elmore may be made directly to The Salvation Army, or the missions support of First Baptist Church – Landrum. Roll Tide!
