Betty Dean, 94, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2023, at Cascades-Verdae in
Greenville, South Carolina, surrounded by loved ones in hospice care.
Born on May 2, 1929, in Miami, Florida, to James (Shorty) and Evelyn Williams, Betty spent her
early years with her parents in Thomaston, Georgia, before pursuing a nursing degree in
Atlanta. It was there that she met her future husband, Jerry, while he pursued an engineering
degree at Georgia Tech. They married in 1951, beginning a family and eventually relocating to
Greenville in the early 1960s. There Betty brought her nursing expertise to her role as a
Benefits Manager at Reliance Electric until she retired.
Betty was always the peacemaker in the family and was a born extravert. Despite frequent
meal delays due to post-event conversations, her warmth was contagious. Her hobbies included
family time, bible study, and a shared love of detective, spy, and military novels with Jerry.
Betty and Jerry were devoted dog lovers, and there was rarely a time when there was not a
family dog in the household. The tradition continues with her 2 sons who each have 2 dogs.
A born-again Christian, she attended Baptist church throughout her life until health issues
prevented her regular attendance. During her last year of life, her family circle expanded to
include the caretakers and other personnel at Cascades-Verdae Memory Care. In the end, she
was surrounded by both groups of loved ones, for which the family is sincerely grateful.
Betty is survived by her sons, John Alan and James William (Bill), and their families: Alan and
Charlene Northcutt (wife) and their daughter Sara Megan; Bill, Mattie (wife), and their children
Nicole (daughter) and Allen (husband), who have two children, Xan and Caden; son Jonah and
Taysha (wife) has children Lily Nalia; and Kaylan, daughter of Jacob Taylor.
She is predeceased by her husband, Jerry Hester Dean, her brother, Bruce Williams, and Jacob
Taylor, stepson of Bill Dean.
The family will hold a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations to Triune Mercy Center
are appreciated: PO Box 3844, Greenville, SC 29608.
