Betsy C Sykes

d. January 17, 2018

Betsy C. Sykes, 88, died peacefully at her home in Rolling Green Village, Greenville, SC, on January 17, 2018. Betsy was born in Logan, WV, the eldest child of Francis McNutt “Dink” Cloyd and Emma Stratton Cloyd. After graduating from Beaver High School in Bluefield, WV, she joined Kappa Kappa Gamma, Beta Upsilon Chapter, as a freshman at West Virginia University. Betsy and her high school beau, the late Robert C. “Bob” Sykes married the September before his last year at VA Tech. With a grin and a twinkle, she often said ‘he needed someone to type his senior thesis’. They were married 59 years.

After the family moved to Greenville, SC, Betsy worked at Henderson Advertising, where she helped design the Clemson Tiger Paw. She created the Harbinger logo for Westminster Presbyterian Church, where they were members. Once their children finished high school, Bob’s career took them to Winnetka, IL, then St Louis, MO, where Betsy completed her MFA in Interior Design at Maryville University. She became a board certified ASID interior designer and founded Sykes & McQuen Interiors when they returned to Greenville, SC. They retired to Seminole Point on Lake Hartwell, where they attended Townville Presbyterian Church.

Betsy is survived by their son, Rob (Jan) Sykes of Pacolet, SC; daughter Meg (Wendell) Pedersen of Rincon, GA; three grandchildren, Elizabeth “EJ” Douglas of Rincon, GA, Merddyn Glaza of Woodstock, GA, Ben Sykes of Martinsburg, WV; six great grandchildren; Twyla Cloyd of Portland, OR, wife of Betsy’s late brother Lt. COL John Cloyd, USAF (retd); Kathy Cloyd of High Point, NC, wife of her late brother, Samuel Cloyd; and Neel Rich of Emory, VA, husband of Bob’s late sister, Iris Sykes Rich.

The funeral service will be at 11 am, Saturday, February 17 at New Dublin Presbyterian Church, Dublin, VA, where she will be interred beside Bob and her parents. Family and friends are welcome at the service and the reception afterward at nearby Rockwood Manor, 5189 Rockwood Road, Dublin, VA 24084. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. https://alzfdn.org/
