Barnwell Rhett Myers, Jr.
Greenville, SC -
Barnwell Rhett Myers, Jr., age 91, loving husband of 69 years to the late Jean Cothran Myers, and son of the late Barnwell Rhett Myers and Louisa Milford Myers, died on June 7, 2016, in Greenville, SC.
Barnwell Myers was born in Charleston, SC on July 8, 1924 in Baker Sanatorium at the corner of Colonial Lake. His mother died in childbirth and he was taken to Ridge Spring, SC, where he was raised by his grandmother. He graduated from Ridge Spring High School in 1941, then attended the Citadel for 3 years. WWII depleted his senior class at the Citadel, so he finished at the University of South Carolina with a degree in Chemistry. He went to Midshipmen school and was commissioned into the US Navy as an Ensign. In 1945 he married the love of his life, Jean. He immediately departed to serve on the USS Guadalcanal (CVE-60). After discharge he attended Emory University School of Dentistry, and taught Chemistry at Ga Tech. Upon graduation he served in the US Air Force at the RAF Fairford station in England, 1950-52. He practiced dentistry in Pickens, Hilton Head, and Central, SC from 1952-1992, and served as the dentist for Miracle Hill Ministries. He also served as deacon at Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson, SC. Barnwell and Jean spent their retirement years in Highlands, NC, then in Pickens, then Beaufort, then Greenville, SC.
Barney never met a stranger, and could talk extensively on a number of subjects. He was a lifelong reader, valued education, and was immensely proud of the advanced education degrees earned by his children and grandchildren. He was active in the Rotary Club, achieving the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He enjoyed his profession of dentistry, traveling, and renovating houses. But his greatest love was his family - his 6 children, 14 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. He will be missed, but his memories will live on the hearts of his loved ones.
He is survived by his 6 children: sons B. Rhett Myers, III (Libby) of Greenville, SC, Michael L. Myers (Laurie) of Augusta, GA, Stephen C. Myers (Dena) of Columbus, OH, Scott D. Myers (Gwen) of Beaufort, SC, David N. Myers (Cindy) of Silver Spring, MD, and daughter Amanda J.
