Barbara Yager Glenning

October 20, 1938 — May 30, 2023

On Tuesday May 30th, Barbara Yager Glenning went home to be with eternal father in heaven after a long battle with Dementia with the wonderful support of the Agape Hospice House. Mom was born in Washington, DC more years ago then she would want anyone to know, to the late Willard and Elizabeth Lawrence. She was also preceded in death by her loving brother Bill. She is survived by her three children Michael Yager (Jody Yager) of Charles Town, WV, Laurie Towery of Spartanburg, SC, and Stephen Yager (Anne Marie Yager) of Raleigh NC; ten grandchildren Trystan Towery, Becca Hutchins (Kyle Hutchins), Bradley Yager, Sam Yager, Nathan Yager, Grady Towery (Briana Towery), Alex Yager (Kaitlyn Yager), Brent Brackett (Kristen Brackett), Matthew Yager (Taylor Yager), and Katelyn Yager; and five great grandchildren.

She spent much of her youth in Smithfield, NC before her parents moved back to Arlington, VA where she graduated from Wakefield HS. She went on to college at Radford where during a winter break, she met this large extremely successful sculler from her hometown, Paul Yager. They quickly fell in love and were married in the late 1950s.

She was a loving and doting mother raising her kids where she was a den mother, cheerleader for all their sporting events, confidant, tutor, and so much more. She transitioned from being a homemaker to becoming one of the most successful Realtors in Northern VA in the late 1970’s where she was ahead of her time in developing a Military Relocations Housing program for our service members moving to the Washington DC areas from bases inside the United States. However, during that time her marriage to Paul ended after 25 years in the mid-1980s.

While on a business trip to CA supporting her Military Relocation program she met a Coast Guard Captain, Walter Glenning and they fell in love, and were married before the end of the decade. They moved to Southern CA where she went on to become a successful mortgage broker. After moving to NC to be close to her aging parents, she started to get back into golf after all but giving it up.

In the 1990’s she and Walter moved to Tucson, AZ to officially retire (and start doing taxes part time), went on to become a successful competitive golfer, and won two Arizona state championships in the scotch twosome category. She and Walter moved back to NC to live at Sea Trail Plantation where she really got special time with her 10 grandchildren, traveled the world, tutored the local elementary students in math, volunteered in church, and was part of a team that protected the turtles at the local beach. She was also a wonderful storyteller and each of her grandchildren to this day miss her stories and adventures. Walter passed away in 2006 after a short battle with cancer and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full honors surrounded by all that loved him.

Barbara will always be remembered as a happy, friendly, positive, loving, smart, beautiful, competitive, and fiercely loyal person who always had a kind word and a smile to greet everyone. She never met anyone she could not talk to and connect with, and she passed on those traits to her children as well. She loved to play golf, watch a good movie, and remained active until the very end.

A memorial celebrating her life will be held in Raleigh, NC on the 11th of June and a private burial will be held by her family in Charlotte, NC on the 12th of June.
