Barbara Belle Crawford, 94, of Sumter, widow of Robert Ryland Crawford, passed away on September 8, 2022. Born in Huntington, West Virginia she was the daughter of James Aaron Hartley and Helen Morris Bailey. Survivors include her children; Carolyn Tabares Smith and husband Peter, Michael Louis Curro and wife Mireille, David Edward Curro and wife Terry, she is also survived by seven grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Robert Thomas Curro, and her brother James Hartley.
Barbara was retired from the US Government. Barbara was a Chorus Line Dancer in Washington, DC in the 1940s and 50s.
She was a devout Catholic who enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, crochet, and the beach. Graveside service will be several days later at Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield Virginia.
Daughter of a WWI veteran, Barbara came of age during WWII and supported our soldiers, sailors, and airmen in many ways throughout her life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or the USO. As a Daughter of the American Revolution, Barbara was very interested in genealogy. She traced her ancestry back before the online websites by going to many courthouses. She wrote a book outlining her family ancestry.
The memorial service will be held at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Rockville Maryland, on September 26, 2022 at 11:00 AM. Grave side service will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield Virginia, (time and date TBD).
