Arthur Overgaag

February 2, 1930 — July 15, 2016

Arthur Overgaag, born Feb. 2, 1930 in Den Hoorn, Netherlands died on July 15, 2016 at Open Arms Hospice in Simpsonville, SC after suffering an extended illness. He is survived by his wife, Sue Chance, M.D., and his daughters, Karina Kennedy and Alisha Stiver, as well as a stepson, Arthur Oswald. He and Sue also have four grandchildren, Becca and William Kennedy, and Jennine and Bob Bovie. All of his children and grandchildren are Canadian, since he lived and worked in Canada for many years. He has quite an extended family in the Netherlands, including a brother, Niek Overgaag, and two sisters, An Veelenturf and Ria Rieff-Overgaag. His pre-deceased siblings were brother, Piet, and sisters, Aplonia, Riet, and Cor. With the exception of Aplonia, who was a Catholic nun, his sisters and brother left numerous daughters and sons behind, several of whom have become grandparents themselves. Arthur was especially close to his brother, Piet's children, since they lost their father at such a young age (43).

Arthur had a degree in mechanical engineering, and was involved in a number of factory and power plant construction projects before becoming a manager for Ontario Hydro (the power plant network in the province of Ontario), which is the position he occupied at the time of his retirement in the '80s. He was a real estate developer in both SC and FL.

He and his wife, Sue, married July 18, 1992. She retired in 2006 from Pickens County Mental Health, and began working as a volunteer doctor at Samaritan Health Clinic in Easley, SC. That winter, they began dividing their time between a home in Jupiter, FL and Pickens County, SC. That continued until April of this year.

Sue was born and raised a Texan, and equalled Arthur in stubborness, which is really saying something. Their marriage, despite a frequent desire to kill each other, was nonetheless a good one with plenty of love to go around. She was holding his hand and telling him she loved him as he passed peacefully from this life to the next.
