Arthur Thomas Krebs, 90 years old, of Spartanburg, SC, peacefully passed away in his home on August 6th, 2023.
Art was born on June 5th, 1933 to the late Claude Gottleib Krebs and Edna Louise Krebs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After Art graduated from Franklin High School in 1951, he attended the University of Iowa in 1951-52; proudly served in the US Air Force,1953-57; and graduated from Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1960.
Upon graduation, Art worked at Cryovac, a WR Grace Company. He soon met the love of his life, Mary Ellen Reichardt Krebs, and they were married in 1961. Characteristic of Art’s ambitious nature, he quickly advanced in his profession, launching he and Mary Ellen from Iowa to many cities around the U.S. and Canada. His successful careers with WR Grace (Cryovac and then Baker & Taylor), lasted 36 years.
Art and Mary Ellen had four children, Kathryn Lynn Krebs, Daniel Arthur Krebs, Sherry Louise Krebs Koch, and Sally Elizabeth Krebs. In every home his family lived, Art created beauty. He turned yards into blooming gardens and forested pathways. His meals were herbed and hearty, and the rooms warmed with jazz. He enjoyed times with song and dance, hikes and travels, and old classic movies. He cherished his family and Golden Retrievers, Sam, Kate, and Hattie. But most of all, Art deeply adored his wife who gave him love, care, and selfless devotion.
Art is predeceased by Kathryn Lynn Krebs, the eldest daughter. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Ellen Krebs; son, Daniel Krebs; daughter-in-law, Karen Krebs; daughter, Sherry Krebs Koch, son-in-law, Karl Koch; daughter, Sally Krebs; family friend, Matthew Petrilla; and nine grandchildren, Megan Smith, Calvin Crase (Bridget Crase), Erica DeSousa (Josh DeSousa), Brian Krebs, Casey Willis, Allison Krebs, Ana Koch, Sean Willis, and Sam Koch; and three great-grandchildren, Rory Crase, Owen Tyler, and Louisa Crase.
A small, grave-side service will be held in Iowa City, date to-be-determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Audubon Society, as Art always loved his birds. To donate, visit:
