Aimo Birger "Bud" Hamberg Jr.

Aimo Birger "Bud" Hamberg, Jr., 89, died December 1, 2013 in Greenville, South Carolina

He was born October 7, 1924, in Kimball Township, Wisconsin.

He was the seventh and youngest child of Aimo Birger Hamberg, Sr. and Ingrid Savioski Hamberg.

He graduated from Lincoln High School in Hurley, Wisconsin, in 1942.

He was drafted into the US Army Air Corps in 1943 and served with the 8th Air Force - 389th Bomb Group (Heavy) stationed in Hethel, England.  He flew 22 combat missions serving as an air crew member on the B24 Liberator.  He was awarded several campaign medals in addition to receiving the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat.

Following his discharge from active duty, he returned home and married Joyce Mildred Hellen in June 1945.  He and his wife had three children.

He earned a technical associate degree from Valparaiso Technical Institute in 1947.

He concluded his working career as the owner of his own electronics repair business following his service at the NASA Johnson Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas, during the Gemini and Apollo missions.

He is survived by his son Tim (wife Carolyn) Hamberg of Greenville, South Carolina, Candy Hamberg of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, granddaughters Kerri ( husband David) Tester of Boston, Massachusetts, and Melissa (husband Kyle) Miller of Baltimore, Maryland, and grandsons Eric (wife Stephani) Hamberg of Columbia, South Carolina, and Matthew (wife Jenna) Hamberg of Travelers Rest, South Carolina.  He is also survived by 6 great-granddaughters and 2 great-grandsons.

He was predeceased by his wife Joyce in 1993 and daughter Susan in 1996.  He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

He will be interned beside his wife and daughter in Rusk, Texas.
