Agnes Dawsey Rogers

April 30, 1917 — April 17, 2016

Agnes Dawsey Rogers, almost 99 years of age, died on Sunday, April 17 in Greenwood, South Carolina. She was the wife of the late Rev. Dr. William F. Rogers, Jr. Agnes was born in Birigui, Brazil on April 30, 1917 to American missionaries Rev. Cyrus Bassett Dawsey, later Bishop of Brazil and Ethel Sanders Dawsey, writer and teacher. Agnes was educated at various schools in Brazil, and at Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee, where she met her future husband, Will.
Agnes and Will were married in 1940 in Brazil, where they served as missionaries for over forty years. Together, they ministered to churches in Quarai, Carazinho, Santo Angelo, Cruz Alta, Fortaleza, Natal and Belem in Brazil; and in Buffalo, Gilbert, Rehoboth and Dunean in the United States; and on the island of Saint Vincent, in the West Indies. As a missionary, Agnes was instrumental in the founding of numerous churches, medical clinics and schools. Aside from her work in the church, Agnes was an enthusiastic gardener and passionate cook. An avid reader in multiple languages, Agnes also loved storytelling and writing. She reared five sons and shared with them her deep appreciation for music and literature and especially her love of people.

Eventually Agnes was lovingly cared for at the Brooks Howell Home in Asheville, at Wesley Commons in Greenwood, and during her final days, by the loving staff of the Hospice House of the Piedmont. Agnes Dawsey Rogers was predeceased by her son Samuel, her sisters Ethel, Sarah, and Mary Ellyn, and by her brother Cyrus. Survivors include four sons: Bill (Bobbie Jean), Paul (Sheila), Cy (Lou), Johnny (Debbie), daughter-in-law Anna Kozak (Mike), twelve grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Hospice House of the Piedmont, 408 West Alexander Ave., Greenwood, South Carolina.
